There’s Nothing Nonsensical About It: Lunch @ L’Idiot du Village

Tucked away in the heart of the Marolles is a cordial little restaurant on the cobblestoned side street of Rue Notre-Seigneur that any self-proclaimed foodie must give a try. L’Idiot du Village is the type of place that even the village idiot would endorse, and it’s where diners are sure to find truly wholesome, seasonal and mouthwatering fare.

Located just a stone’s throw away from the Grand Sablon, the restaurant is warm and inviting with eccentric decor that consists of miniature lights, colourful wallpaper, oddly decorated lampshades and a host of peculiar objects scattered about. In spite of the – what would appear to be – clashing styles, L’Idiot du Village manages to retain a dapper and antiquated feel with heavy wooden tables set with sturdy blue china.

Lunching with a couple of friends last week, we rocked up shortly after noon to a modestly busy restaurant. The staff were friendly and the waitress was extremely helpful in suggesting options that were dairy and/or gluten free or that could be made Intolerant-friendly. With plenty of hearty winter options to choose from I went with salmon and endive while my foodie compatriots settled on a deer with endive dish and steak with potatoes and a poached pear.

When the food came out I paused several moments before diving in as it looked far too good to eat. The salmon was seared on one side and flaked easily off onto my fork into segments that, quite literally, melted in my mouth. Though I left the potatoes to the side (nothing against potatoes themselves, but I just wasn’t in the mood) the endive was the perfect accompaniment to the dish as it had a slightly bitter edge that complimented the slightly sweet seasoning on the salmon.

My dining companions were equally as pleased about their dishes with the steak and poached pear getting solid reviews in particular.

There were plenty of choices for dessert (including Intolerant-friendly mango slices with almond milk), but as I was quite satiated I settled for tea. One friend however, went all out and ordered an extravagant apple tart with a generous dollop of ice cream on top.

Could you, in all honesty, pass this up? If I weren't Intolerant I'd have been all over this.

Now, I may be lactose intolerant, but that didn’t stop me from ravaging his dessert with my eyes. Not only did it look fabulous, but it smelled divine. I’m told it tasted as good as it looked…*sigh*…lucky guy.

L’Idiot du Village also offers vegetarian options for those intolerant to meat, as well as a take away menu for people who want something delicious on the run. The average meal (without wine) runs about 20€ per person for lunch and 45€ for dinner.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t think there’s anything nonsensical about that kind of price/quality at all.
